The German Cemetery
Motta St. Anastasia/Catania
As we entered this area, my friend and I both shivered. Her
well-mannered dog (in a shoulder carrier) became agitated.
4, 552 German war casualties on Sicily found their
final resting place here.
Valentine's Day
2012
Our neighbor told the world of his love for his wife!
Our neighbor, Skippy, came to visit.

Visitors
May: Although we had not met Turgay before, we had heard our
Atlanta friends speak of him. Delightful company even
if he and Flint were to sit and watch "NatGeo Wild" all the
time....which they did NOT!
Dear friend, Maryellen, who showed Turgay around Sicily.
She and I also enjoyed a little adventure in the town of Lentini
and the jewelry store Tabacco. Then it was on up the
mountain for fresh olive oil, fruits, and vegetables.
A former student now living in Spain came for a football
game. If we could just bottle his pleasant spirit. Of course,
he's tough on the football field!
Ken and Patty, parents of a former student (now a university junior)
and wonderful people, were in town for a few days.
Ken and Flint rehashed racquetball stories.
That same weekend our first Sig. priest came to town; however,
I forgot to take pictures during the way-too-brief visit.
Circus Comes to Town
(actually it was right in the neighborhood)
Dear friend/former colleague/neighbor said, "Let's go to
the circus!" We bought the slightly more expensive
seats for comfort. We were the first people to walk
in, and we picked our seats...front and center!
The performers also sold the tickets and the concessions. |
Quite the variety of animals and entertainment...lions, tigers, leaping llamas, camels, an American bison and the hippo. |
Very enjoyable show!!! |

New Offering in the Port
Roaming around one Saturday, we visited Vecchia Dogana in the port.
An old building was refurbished and houses Sicilian food, products, and art.
Some of the cruise lines offer tickets and excursions. This should give
Catania a boost in the tourist trade.

Carnevale
18 February 2012
Friend Nancy had the best idea ever about Carnevale.
Go see the floats as they were being pulled out of their
covered areas. Avoid the crowds.Get close views.
Carnevale in Acireale is huge. I've heard that it's the second
largest in Italy after Venice. Social and political commentary
prevail.
NMCRS Farewell
Volunteerism is something I believe in. Selfishly, I started
volunteering at NMCRS to enhance my knitting skills by knitting
baby afghans. The blankets are included when a mother-to-be
or brand new mother takes NMCRS Budget for Baby class.
Then the Chairman of Volunteers, Joy, of The Joy of Everyday Cooking
fame, asked if I would work the front desk one morning a week.
How could I refuse? The people I have met through this
organization are delightful. Unfortunately, people
come and they go. This was Joy's farewell at a place
out in the middle of nowhere. Great food!

Taking a Wrong Turn
Life in Sicily can be unpredictable.
One never knows what one may run across.
Enroute to Nicolosi, a wrong turn took a friend
and me to a lovely outdoor worship area.
